Google “freelance copywriter” and you’ll find three kinds of writers for hire: tired old hacks that may generate response but have zero conceptual ability, unemployed journalists pretending to know advertising, and former agency copywriters who can write conceptual ads, but wouldn’t have the slightest idea or interest how to write a compelling direct mail letter or 300-page website. I can do all of these things. With my eyes closed.
I learned to be a reliable freelancer by working with
so many bad ones. When I farmed out work at Ogilvy and other agencies, I got
burned on a regular basis… freelancers blew deadlines, didn’t return
calls, turned in work that didn’t match the caliber of creative in their
portfolio, showed up late, disappeared for days, and submitted outrageously
inflated invoices. I saw a major opportunity to provide a much higher level
of service (and take more vacation time.) So I turned in my corporate American
Express card became a freelancer myself. And the phone hasn’t stopped
ringing since. Here’s why….
